Dollar Story #16: Blind Eye

Marla ducks her head and hunches her shoulders so high they almost meet her ears. Pivots her head so her nose almost kisses her left shoulder. Squeezes her eyes shut so tightly she sees stars and polka dots. Still, she cannot escape the sound of her grandmother’s red-handled paring knife pressing into the dull brown-grey skin.
She can’t believe her grandmother can hum at a time like this. Or laugh. Or wipe her hands on a kitchen towel, like what’s on them is only water and not the tears of the eye she’s just gouged out of the unwitting potato.
